Bringing it Back to Grossman’s

 

A benefit concert to establish the Amy Louie Grossman’s Musician Scholarship will be held at Grossman’s Tavern (379 Spadina Ave) on Tuesday May 29. Prior to her passing in 2011, Grossman’s proprietor Amy Louie had a dream  of one day establishing a fund to assist musician`s in their creative work. The scholarship will strive to provide funding on a yearly basis for a musician or music project and will reach out to other non-profit arts organizations to help determine who the recipients will be. Admission will be by donation, and there will be performances by Donnie “Mr. Downchild” Walsh (pictured), Danny Marks, Jerome Godboo, Gary Kendall, Caution Jam, Laura Hubert, The McDonald Rush Band, Alec Fraser, Bill Hedefine, Steve Grisbrook, The Swingin Blackjacks, Brian Cober, Nicola Vaughn, Shakey Dagenais, Terry Wilkinsand more.

 

Carey Ker – A Celebration of Life & Music

A celebration of the life and music of long time TBS member Carey Ker will take place at the Delta Chelsea Monarchs Pub on Monday May 28, 7pm-1am. Confirmed musical guests include Tony SpringerMichael KeithMichael Danckert (pictured), Julie SteinwallThe ShadesRobin Banks and more to be confirmed. Monarchs Pub opens at 5pm and delicious food is available to purchase from the menu if you’d like to arrive early. Music will commence at approximately 8pm. There will be an opportunity to speak between sets if anyone would like to share a story or say a few words.

Shakura S’Aida – Two CD Launches

Marking the release of her brand new double Electro-Fi album TimeShakura S’Aida will be performing two separate CD release concerts. The first show takes place tonight at Revival (783 College St) and will be an electric rock performance based around the first CD in the two-CD set titled Time to Rock Your Soul. Doors at 8pm, Show at 9pm. The second show takes place at Hugh’s Room tomorrow night and will be based around the blues oriented second CD in the set titled Time for the Blues. Doors at 6pm, Show at 8:30pm, Harrison Kennedy opens.

Call For New Blues Talent!

Attention emerging Canadian blues artists…The Toronto Blues Society Talent Search is back! Six finalists will be chosen to perform at the finals taking place at Nathan Phillips Square during City of Toronto’s Tasty Thursdays on Thursday August 16, noon-2pm. The finalists will compete for a grand prize which includes a showcase at the Blues Summit Six, a performance at the Southside Shuffle Festival, a show at The Delta Chelsea Monarchs Pub, a photo shoot with Bill King, recording/mixing time at Revolution Studios, and consultations with industry professionals!

Submissions are open now, and close on Friday June 15 at 5pm. You may submit through Sonicbidshttp://www.sonicbids.com/Opportunity/OpportunityView.aspx?opportunity_id=106751 or send a physical package to the TBS office (Talent Search Submission, 910 Queen Street West, Suite B04, Toronto, ON, M6J 1G6) with a CD, one sheet, and a cheque for $15. Eligibility is limited to acts who are not on a major label, do not have a major distribution deal (i.e. not distributed to retail stores) and have not been chosen as a finalist in a past edition of the talent search.

Digital Dollars: Let’s Get Music Fans

The final Digital Dollars seminar “Let’s Get Music Fans” will take place at Lula Lounge (1585 Dundas St W, M6K 1T9) on Saturday May 26, 1pm-4pm. This session will feature Dmitri Vietze  (Rock Paper Scissors, Host), Johan Hultqvist (Pinwheel Music), Allison Saretsky (Luminato), Kevin LeFlar (officialCOMMUNITY) and Reginald Ray (Small World Music). The monthly seminar series features leading thinkers on the new digital music landscape. Check out the four previous sessions at www.livestream.com/torontobluessociety. TBS Gladstone Series

The Toronto Blues Society presents the best in blues talent the first Thursday of each month at the recently renovated Melody Bar in The Gladstone Hotel. Performances are free to the public and begin at 9pm. Robin Banks will play a duo show on Thursday June 7http://www.gladstonehotel.com
