JUNOFEST Blues

Congratulations to this year’s JUNO nominees for best blues: The Sojourners, Johnny Max, FATHEAD, Harry Manx, and Jim Byrnes!

There will be two blues showcases during JUNO Week leading up to the JUNO Awards show in Toronto. The shows will take place on March 25 & March 26 at Monarchs Pub (Delta Chelsea Hotel). The Friday night performance will be hosted by Lily Sazz and feature the Johnny Max Band, The 24th Street Wailers and Suzie Vinnick; The Saturday night performance will be hosted by Brian Blain and feature FATHEAD, Jim Byrnes (pictured), and Urban Preacher. Weekend Wristbands and advance tickets available at www.ticketmaster.ca  

Music From The Big House Documentary Ticket Giveaway

Johnny Cash may have performed for inmates, but Maple Blues Award winner Rita Chiarelli (pictured) goes one step further, and performs with the inmates of Angola Prison in the documentary Music From The Big House.  Four bands, one woman, and two hours of the blues. The screenings take place at The Carlton Theatre (20 Carlton Street) March 25-31 at 1:30, 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30pm. The March 27 screenings will be co-presented by The Toronto Blues Society. The last three evening screenings will be introduced by Richard Flohil with a Q&A session following each screening.

Gladstone Hotel Melody Bar Blues / Free Admission

The Toronto Blues Society will be presenting the best in local blues talent the first Thursday of each month at The Melody Bar in The Gladstone Hotel. There will be no cover charge and each performance will begin at 8:30pm. Upcoming performances include Steve Dawson (April 7, pictured), Rick Fines (May 5), and more to be announced soon! http://www.gladstonehotel.com/ 

 

Harmonica Workshop

Hosted by Maple Blues Award winner Paul Reddick, this year’s harmonica workshop will take place on Sat April 9 at Dominion on Queen (500 Queen St E). The workshop will run from 2pm-6pm and will cost $10 for members / $12 for public. The backup band consists of Bucky Berger on drums, James Rasmussen on bass, and Teddy Leonard on guitar with guest artists Ken Yoshioka, Al Lerman and Howard Willett (pictured). Presented by The Toronto Blues Society in association with Lee Oskar.

 

Ninth Annual Heartwood Blues

A fundraising event for Heartwood Place, a charity dedicated to affordable housing in the Waterloo region, is being held at the Newfoundland Club in Cambridge on Saturday March 26. Performers include Dylan Wickens (pictured), Bill Durst, Daddy Long Legs and Paul James. For more information www.heartwoodplace.ca
