The Toronto Blues Society is holding their annual guitar workshop at the Horseshoe Tavern, Saturday, March 30, 2:00 pm. Hosted by Fathead‘s fiery guitar slinger, Teddy Leonard, this year’s lineup includes Colin Linden, Morgan Davis, John Tilden, and Don Rooke. They will be backed up by bass ace Bob “Omar” Tunnochand Ed White on drums. Al Lerman, who plays regularly with Teddy and Morgan and is well aquainted with the other participants, has contributed a little background on the players.
George Banton began his singing career in the churches of St. Elizabeth parish in Jamaica. He emigrated to Canada in 1976 and began performing various styles and scored a number-one R&B hit with “Faithful and True” in the early 80s. Other hits followed, including the self-penned “Honey I Will”. He has been twice nominated for the coveted JUNO Award and continues to touch audiences in Toronto and beyond with a style that reaches from Joe Tex to ZZ Hill and a soulful delivery that remains forever connected to the church choirs of Jamaica.
Guy Davis made his Toronto debut at a North by Northeast showcase last year and performed at Soul `n Blues later that summer. He returns to Harbourfront Centre on Sunday, February 4 for an afternoon set in the Water’s Edge Cafe at 2pm. February 3, he’ll be be doing an opening spot for It’s Comedy and Story Time with Kenny Robinson and the Nubian Disciples All Black All Star Comedy Revue as part of Kuumba, Harbourfront Centre’s salute to African Heritage Month.
Christmas Blue is the release by Salome Bey and the Relatives on a new label, Rainbowhirl Music Inc (RMI). The album also features Salome’s daughters Jacintha Tuku and Saidah Baba Talibah and was produced by Orin Isaacs. Salome will be starring in a CBC-TV special, Salome Bey’s Christmas Soul on Friday, December 22.
On Saturday, November 25, 1995 at 8 pm the Toronto Blues Society will host the 9th annual Women’s Blues Revue at Trinity St. Paul’s United Church, 427 Bloor St. W. in Toronto. The TBS Women’s Blues Revue has become an incomparable Canadian institution. Each year since its inception, TBS members have organized a phenomenally successful event profiling Canadian Blues women vocalists backed by some of our finest musicians. 1995 is no different as the Women’s Blues Revue features multi-talented artists such as Diana Braithwaite, Maureen Brown, Shirley Eikhard, Sue Foley, Thando Hyman, Liberty Silver and Tobi Lark.
