Gladstone Series: Rick Taylor & Carlos del Junco – Tonight

The Toronto Blues Society presents the best in blues talent thefirst Thursday of each month at the recently renovated Melody Bar in The Gladstone Hotel. Performances are free to the public and begin at 9pm. The next show is on Thurs March 1 and features a duo performance by Rick Taylor & Carlos del Junco (pictured)!

Guitar Workshop – This Saturday

Danny Marks (pictured) will host the Guitar Workshop on Sat March 3 at Dominion on Queen (500 Queen St E). The featured guitarists are Donna Grantis, Kevin Breit, and Dylan Wickens! The show will feature performances with an educational component and will run 1pm-4pm. $8 TBS members / $10 public at the door.

Digital Dollars – Let’s Blog Music

The third Digital Dollars seminar “Let’s Blog Music” will take place at Lula Lounge (1585 Dundas St W, M6K 1T9) on Saturday March 10, 1pm-4pm. This session will feature Johan Hulqvist (Pinwheel Music, host), Dave Cool (Bandzoogle), David Newland (Roots Music Canada), Li Robbins (CBC), and more. Check back in the coming weeks for more announcements on the guest speakers. The monthly seminar series features leading thinkers on the new digital music landscape. The FREE ADMISSION series is being presented by the Toronto Blues Society, Batuki Music, OCFF and Lula Lounge, and is supported by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture. Music From the Big House Screening – Tomorrow

Rita Chiarelli (pictured) will be performing and screening her award winning documentary “Music From the Big House” to kick off the Belleville International Documentary Film Festival’s opening gala at the Empire Theatre on March 2 at 7pm. www.downtowndocfest.ca

Canadian Music Week Blues Showcase

DAWG FM in association with the Toronto Blues Society presents the Canadian Music Week Blues Showcase on Friday March 23. The show will take place at the newly renovated Annex Wreckroom (794 Bathurst St), conveniently located at the Bathurst/Bloor subway station. The performing artists in order of appearance beginning at 9pm are Chris Antonik (pictured), Suzie Vinnick, Harrison Kennedy, and Shakura S’Aida. Doors at 8pm, advance tickets and member discount at the door $10.

Africa Up Close

Africa Up Close is a concert series being put on by the Batuki Music Society which takes place at the intimate NOW Lounge (189 Church St) and features not only terrific music, but also offers healthy, organic food. Blues artist Madagascar Slim performs on Friday March 2. Doors at 7pm, show at 8pm, $10 at the door. For more information, go to www.batukimusic.com

Independent Music Awards – Blues Category Nominees

The 12th Annual Independent Music Awards takes place on Saturday March 12 at The Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, 8pm. The nominees in the blues category are David Gogo (Cordova Bay, pictured), Harry Manx & Kevin Breit (Stony Plain), MonkeyJunk (Stony Plain), Suzie Vinnick (independent), The 24th Street Wailers (independent). Talent Search Submissions Open

Attention emerging Canadian blues artists…The Toronto Blues Society Talent Search is back! Six finalists will be chosen to perform at the finals taking place at Nathan Phillips Square during City of Toronto’s Tasty Thursdays on Thursday August 16, noon-2pm. The finalists will compete for a grand prize which includes a showcase at the Blues Summit Six, a performance at the Southside Shuffle Festival, a show at The Delta Chelsea Monarchs Pub, a photo shoot with Bill King, recording/mixing time at Revolution Studios, and consultations with industry professionals!

Submissions are open now, and close on Friday June 15 at 5pm. You may submit through Sonicbids http://www.sonicbids.com/Opportunity/OpportunityView.aspx?opportunity_id=106751 or send a physical package to the TBS office (Talent Search Submission, 910 Queen Street West, Suite B04, Toronto, ON, M6J 1G6) with a CD, one sheet, and a cheque for $15. Eligibility is limited to acts who are not on a major label, do not have a major distribution deal and have not been chosen as a finalist in a past edition of the talent search.

Holger Petersen: Talking Music at Toronto Public Libraries

The founding owner of Stony Plain Records and longtime host of CBC’sSaturday Night Blues, Petersen is one of the country’s most trusted authorities on all things blues. In this foray into print, interviews some of the world’s most important and loved artists, including Long John Baldry, Eric Burdon, Ry Cooder, Mick Fleetwood, Jeff Healey, Alan Lomax, Sam Phillips, Maria Muldaur, Bonnie Raitt, Duke Robillard and Mavis Staples. Don’t miss this rare treat to meet and quiz our national bluesologist. Holger will be speaking at S. Walter Stewart on Wed April 18 at 7pm-8:30pm, and at Cedarbrae on April 18 at 1pm-2:30pm. Both of these events are free to the public.

DAWG FM in Toronto

DAWG FM is applying for a radio license to broadcast in Toronto. As part of the process they will need letters of support written by the blues community in May. TBS will announce details in the coming weeks, but until then, check out DAWG online athttp://www.dawgfm.com/
