TBS @ Gladstone Hotel Tonight w/ Danny Marks

The Toronto Blues Society presents the best in blues talent the first Thursday of each month at the Melody Bar in The Gladstone Hotel. Performances are free to the public, begin at 9pm, and the Gladstone has an excellent menu if you arrive for the show early!

Danny Marks (pictured) kicks off the Gladstone Hotel’s August Summertime Blues series tonight! Check out some other great blues happening at the Melody Bar throughout August including The Don River Blues Band (Aug 10), The Distillery (Aug 22), Blues & Troubles w/Ronnie Hayward (Aug 24) and more!

A limited number of discount tickets for the annual Maple Blues Awards atKoerner Hall on Monday January 20 are on sale now. 27th Annual Women’s Blues Revue – Band Member Update

The 27th annual Women’s Blues Revue returns to historic Massey Hall onSaturday November 30 featuring six top female vocalists backed by new bandleader Rebecca Hennessy (trumpet, pictured here at her recent wedding!),Morgan Doctor (drums), and Christine Bougie (guitar), who join Brandi Disterheft (bass), Suzie Vinnick (guitar), Lily Sazz (keys), Colleen Allen(sax), and Carrie Chesnutt (sax).

The charter member 20% discount begins Wed Aug 14. Check here next week for information on acquiring the password. The public on sale date is Mon Aug 19.

The featured vocalists will be announced in the coming weeks.

Blues in the Garden

The free annual Blues in the Garden art display and live blues performance takes place 2pm-5pm during the Queen West Art Crawl on Sunday September 22. There will be a performance by 2013 TBS Talent Search winner Sugar Brown (pictured), as well as bbq (dietary options available) and beverages available for purchase, including Dan Aykroyd Wines.

Thanks to the 4479 campaign, Toronto City Council has unanimously passed a motion to establish a music city alliance with Austin, Texas. The alliance is intended to drive economic and cultural development opportunities in both Toronto and Austin by sharing best practices, developing new trade and tourism initiatives, and fostering expanded collaboration between the two cities’ respective music communities. Council has directed City staff to report back to the city’s Economic Development Committee on the alliance’s terms and structure. The motion at Toronto City Hall follows the June 27, 2013 passage of a similar motion in Austin.

International Blues Challenge Artist Call Out

The International Blues Challenge will take place on Beale Street in MemphisJanuary 21-25, 2014. The TBS is holding a live performance competition (date and venue TBC) to determine which artists will be sanctioned by TBS to compete in Memphis. Two artists will be selected in the following categories to perform in front of industry professional judges: Band, Solo/duo, Youth (under 21). There is also an opportunity to submit a sanctioned self-released recording. Please inquire.

If you are an artist who is market-ready and financially able to incur all costs and time associated with registering and travelling to Memphis to compete, please send an inquiry email to [email protected] – Particularly solo/duo artists!
