As we head into the month of our biggest event, the Women’s Blues Review, we continue with our policy of profiling its performers. We begin in this issue with an update of Jani Lauzon‘s career, continue with excerpts from Robin Banks‘ trip to Memphis, and tell you about Chris Armstrong‘s new CD. The big show is Nov. 30, at Trinity St. Paul’s, and the other singers are Dianne Brooks, Andrea Koziol, Lee Aaron, Georgette Fry & Melanie Jean. The Band Leader is Lily Sazz.
Dianne Brooks will share the stage with1996 New Blues Talent Search winner Robin Banks, rock diva Lee Aaron, Chris Armstrong, Juno nominee Georgette Fry, Melanie Jean, Andrea Koziol, and Jani Lauzon. This year’s vocal luminaries will be backed by a sidereal band including keyboardist and band leader Lily Sazz, guitarist Kris St. Louis, bass player Suzie Vinnick, and drummer Maureen Brown, trumpet player Sarah McElcheran, and saxophonists Colleen Allen and Carrie Chesnutt.

“Even in old age, he retains a playful and cherubic quality though the hard lessons are likewise drawn on his face: the poverty and racism which caused the needless early deaths of both his father and mother from lack of medical attention; the senseless shooting death of his sister Blanche by her husband (the man who had been responsible for first introducing Honeyboy to a guitar); the flood of 1927 which could have killed them all if not for the Red Cross; and the long economic blight of the Great Depression.” – John Anthony Brisbin from the Earwig CD Delta Bluesman.
Georgette Fry will be appearing at several music festivals between June and September, including: the 10th Anniversary of the du Maurier Downtown Jazz Festival in June; the Heineken Soul ‘n’ Blues Festival, the Home County Music Festival in London, the Wolfe Island, and Perth Theatre Festivals in July; the Blue Skies Festival in early August, followed by concerts in Kingston’s Grand Theatre.
This year’s recipient of the Blues With A Feeling Award is Morgan Davis, a veteran of the Canadian blues scene for over twenty years. The award will be presented on Monday, May 27 at the newly re-opened Silver Dollar during the TBS’s 11th Anniversary Bash. It only seems appropriate that the evening’s entertainment will be provided by Morgan and his band, helped along with a few musical guests.
